3 Differences Between Fine Furniture and Cheap Stuff

When investing in furniture for your new home, you want to make sure you are spending your money on high-quality pieces that are going to look great in your space and last you for years to come. While there are many cheap furniture brands out there, they just don’t provide the same durable quality that fine furniture brands do. Since it can be difficult to differentiate between them, shopping at fine furniture stores is the best way to find pieces that are true gems. Here are three key differences between fine furniture and low-quality furniture to keep an eye out for.

1. Fine furniture is made with top quality materials

When shopping at fine furniture stores, you will notice that the materials used are quite different than what you would find at a mass retailer. Familiarizing yourself with the types of materials used for furniture construction can help you be more informed when you are shopping. For example, good quality furniture is usually made from hard or solid wood, as opposed to softwood or paperboards. Good quality furniture also uses down filler or high-density foam instead of lightweight foam. Look for natural fiber fabrics that aren’t mass produced as well.

2. Fine furniture has a luxurious finish

This is something that’s harder to quantify but nonetheless is very important to look at when you are shopping for furniture. To determine if a piece of furniture is high quality, look at the finish on it. You can usually tell if the wood is finished using a high-quality stain or if the manufacturer has just slapped on a cheap imitation. The same goes for fabric – you can typically tell instinctively if the fabric is well made or not. Use your hands to touch the furniture, as the texture is usually the biggest giveaway.

3. Fine furniture has an appropriate weight

Unlike when visiting fine furniture stores, something you might notice if you are shopping for inexpensive furniture is that items that are typically heavy are very light and vice versa. For example, cheaply made metal imitation lamps or stools are often much lighter than they would be if they were made with the real thing. Conversely, some imitation woods are much heavier than their high-quality counterparts. Compare the weight of each model you are looking at to get an idea of what is normal for each category of furniture and what to look for.
