Art Sample Furniture was first established in 1927 by George Young. A few years later, Gerrit Wierda, Sr., became store manager, and was the first of four generations of the Wierda family to work at Art Sample. At that time, the store was located on the corner of Washington and Tuscola in downtown Saginaw's shopping district, right across from the Temple Theater.
In 1964 Gerrit's two sons, Edwin and Gerrit, Jr., took over the business. Six years later they moved the store to its present location on N. Michigan Ave, converting the former Sunshine Biscuit Factory into what became known as the “block long showroom”. At the time, Art Sample carried appliances as well as bedding and furniture. Throughout the following years, the appliances were dropped to make room to sell flooring and window treatments. Interior designers were added to the staff to help clients with complete redecorating projects.
In 1985 the present owners, Randy and Denny, took over for their father, Edwin. In 2004 they purchased Feige's Interiors on Berl Drive off Tittabawassee. Now the Art Sample family could meet any taste and any budget.
